Blackcurrants are easy to grow and more tolerant of heavy soils than other currant bushes. Just one plant can provide a generous crop of berries. If blackcurrant bushes are kept well-fed and watered, you could be harvesting fruit a year after planting.
Blackcurrants prefer well-drained but moisture-retentive soil, though they adapt to most soil conditions. They fruit best in full sun but will still do well in light shade. Avoid places prone to cold winds or late frosts, which can damage the flowers and reduce the crop.
Blackcurrants are delicious, easy to grow, and packed with vitamin C and other medicinal benefits. They can be eaten fresh or added to pies, jams, and cordials, making them a versatile and healthy addition to your garden.
'Ben Sarek' is a popular variety found in UK gardens due to its very good resistance to big bud mite and good cropping. 'Ben Lomond', bred by the Scottish Crop Research Institute, is another excellent choice with its upright growth and compact habit, making it perfect for small gardens or containers.
Blackcurrant shrubs are fast-growing and may begin to give fruit in the first three years after planting. At maturity, the shrub can reach up to 1.8 meters (6 feet) in height, with a spread of 1.5 meters (5 feet). Its lifespan generally spans between 15 to 20 years.
