Commonly Asked Questions

What is the best month to plant broccoli?

Planting. For spring-planted broccoli, start seeds indoors in early to mid-April. For the autumn crop, you can start seeds indoors or out, in early to late July. Whether you plant in spring or summer, a row cover will shield the plants from wind and insects during the first weeks of growth.

How long does broccoli take to grow?

Regular sowings of broccoli can provide harvests from mid-summer to the following spring. Plants take four to ten months to start cropping, depending on the sowing time and variety, then provide pickings for up to two months. Summer varieties crop much more quickly than winter varieties.

Does broccoli grow back every year?

Most varieties of broccoli grow as annuals, producing a large head at the end of the season and that’s it. But perennial broccoli, also known as sprouting broccoli, produces many small, tender florets. Broccoli can be grown as a perennial even in areas where temperatures hit minus 20 degrees.

Can you grow broccoli in pots?

Broccoli is perfectly happy to be grown in pots. It does get very widespread, however, so plant only one per 5L container. You can fit two to three plants in a 15L container.

Should I cut off broccoli flowers?

Don’t let your broccoli head develop to this stage as it will become mealy. If the little buds start stretching or showing yellow flower petals, cut the head, no matter how small. A perfect head of broccoli will be big and have lots of very tight green buds.
