Commonly Asked Questions
What is the best month to plant lavender?
Lavender is best planted in April or May as the soil naturally warms up. Lavender should never be planted in winter when young plants are vulnerable to rotting in cold, wet soils.
When should lavender be cut back?
It's best to cut lavender in spring before shoots develop — around February. You can cut individual sprigs throughout the summer and cut back a little harder in autumn.
Where do lavender plants grow best?
Lavender needs full sun and well-drained soil to grow best. In hot summer climates, afternoon shade may help them thrive. Lavender performs best in low to moderately-fertile soils, so don't amend the soil with organic matter before planting. It prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils.
Will lavender survive winter?
English lavender is winter-hardy to Zone 5 and may only need a thin layer of straw for extra protection. Spanish and French lavenders are only hardy to Zone 8 and will need to be brought indoors in colder areas.
Can I plant lavender in June?
It's best to plant a lavender hedge in mid to late spring or early autumn. April is ideal, but September works too, allowing them to root before autumn. Avoid the high summer months and from November through February.
