Commonly Asked Questions
Do lobelia come back every year?
Lobelia is treated as an annual in most regions, though it may come back from year to year in warmer climates. There are perennial lobelias, such as the cardinal flower, that do return annually.
Where is the best place to plant lobelia?
Lobelia cardinalis thrives best in sun or partial shade and needs very moist, fertile soil that doesn't dry out. Lobelia tupa prefers full sun in a sheltered spot with fertile, well-drained soil, and may need winter protection in harsher climates.
Why is lobelia so hard to grow?
Annual lobelia, unlike Lobelia cardinalis, can rot if soil conditions are too wet. Though they need evenly moist soil, lobelias may require supplemental watering during hotter weather or prolonged dry spells for optimal growth.
Do lobelia need deadheading?
There's no need to deadhead the spent flowers; annual lobelia self-cleans by dropping them on its own. You can encourage another flush of flowers by gently shearing the plant back by around half and watering well during hot weather.
What month do you plant lobelia?
Lobelia seeds should be sown in pots or seed trays in February or March, at a temperature of 21-25°C (70-75°F). When seedlings are large enough, transplant them into 7.5-9 cm (3-3.5 in) pots, and gradually harden off before planting out after all risks of frost have passed.
