Commonly Asked Questions
Will petunias grow back next year?
Petunias are perennial, although most bedding types are grown as annuals from seed each year. The trailing varieties, such as Surfinias, are perennial and are grown from cuttings or new plants.
How long do petunias last?
As long as you properly care for your petunias, they'll bloom from planting to hard frost. In very cold areas, their growing season may only be 12 weeks, but in warmer areas, they can last two or three times as long.
Do petunias like sun or shade?
Petunias need at least 5 or 6 hours of good sunlight, and they'll perform even better when located in full sun all day. The more shade they receive, the fewer flowers they'll produce.
What do I do with petunias in winter?
Some petunias, principally trailing varieties, can be kept over winter if cut back and brought into a warm environment. If space is limited, root cuttings in late summer, pot up individually into small pots and keep on a windowsill indoors for the winter.
How do I save petunias for next year?
The pots will need to be moved to an indoor area that can offer some protection. Getting the potted plants out of cold temperatures and into a basement or garage can protect the roots so that the plants will grow again in the spring. Trim back overgrowth and water when the soil dries out.
